Be Aware of the Aflac Duck

How many times have we watched an Aflac commercial and found it somewhat amusing and entertaining-the guy with the ridiculously twisted leg taunted by adult men still living off their parents-the couple who goes rowing in a boat with a hole in it, or the girl who breaks her ankle with the tiny dog who so not fits the name Dragon, and of course the Aflac Duck who saves the day.

Tragedy does not discriminate

We choose to be entertained instead of warned.  It is easier to ignore the actual message that tragedy can strike, without warning, and leave you helpless and penniless. Or maybe we think that it will never happen to us.
A tragic accident can happen to anyone. A debilitating illness can happen to anyone. And what do we do when they happen? Why call Aflac, of course. All joking aside, Aflac does take care of your financial needs. And to those of us who cannot earn an income during recuperation time (anywhere from 3 months to sometimes years) that is a life saver.
However, all the money in the world does not reduce or eliminate the pain that racks the body in times of illness.

The best protection

Is there any type of insurance that will give you pain relief?
Yes there is, and there are no premiums to pay, deadlines or qualifications to meet. The insurance policy you inherited when you were born is called the mind.
Through the mind you heal the body.  First we have to remember that the body has a natural healing process, in other words, no matter how long it takes, the body will repair itself. So where does “mind” come in? The way you think impacts the healing process. If you think you’ll never get well, and you truly believe it, then you won’t. If you believe you will get well, then you will.

Children are not spared

I personally know a teenage boy (my relative) who was practicing for the Olympics. He was a strong gymnast whose challenge was to do the “Iron Cross”- a skill performed on rings by extending both arms straight out from the sides of the body while suspended in midair. Unfortunately, he fell and broke his neck.

Athletes who had sustained that specific injury did not fully recover. The doctors diagnosed that he would never walk again. Everyone accepted the diagnosis except the young man. Through months of excruciating pain and suffering he told himself and his family that he would walk again. His classmates, his school and the whole city prayed for him and he spoke to himself every day affirming that he would walk again.

He did walk again and went on to become a champion martial artist in the US Marines and later worked as a law enforcement agent for the Secret Service at the White House.

He literally cashed in on his “insurance” (his mind) and his asset was prayer.

Everyone has a mind. Everyone has access to prayer, even if you are the only one who prays.
Healing begins in the mind and prayer supports it.

This young man was exceptional; he was a highly trained athlete, so you probably think that there is no comparison between his getting well and your getting well. The comparison is not with his body, but it is with his mind.  We all have an exceptional “mind”.

Finding comfort in times of illness

If you are ill and depression is convincing you that life won’t get any better, use your mind this way:
  • Talk to yourself daily
  • Remind yourself that you are loved even if it is only you that loves yourself
  • Tell yourself “God is present within me as life and that powerful life renews and perfects me”. If god is not in your belief system then tell yourself that the life-force inside will heal you
  • See each day as a time spent healing
  • Expect a miracle
  • Allow yourself to see your blessings (no matter how small), count them, and be grateful for them
  • See yourself whole, healthy
  • Pray for yourself and have others pray for you

Does this really work?

I can attest to these suggestions, they worked for me.
Recently, I had Shingles and words cannot describe the suffering it puts the body through while it tries to frighten the mind into thinking that death is the only relief.

Through positive thinking, love and prayer I can thankfully say that I am in the process of making a full recovery. My energy levels are back to normal and I am almost back to my daily routines. Everyone heals at a different rate, but everyone does heal. The mind is a powerful tool in the healing process. It is your heritage, your rejuvenation. Claim it.  Use it.

We do take different forms of medication during our illness, do not disregard the fact that this can and often does assist in healing. However, know that it is the delicate mechanism in the body itself that does the actual healing. The mind controls that mechanism and you control the mind.

Why the duck

So where does the silly, cute Aflac duck fit in?

The duck symbolizes intuition, emotional comfort, and protection. Aflac couldn’t have found a more profound brand.  The often amusing commercials are designed to remind us that life changes dramatically, without notice, and when it does be prepared by having health insurance.

This not so amusing blog is to remind you that life, indeed, can change dramatically, without notice but that we are prepared.  We do have health insurance-our minds, love and prayer.
